Is Science Useful?

It isn’t always easy to answer whether or not science is beneficial. Scientists are frequently incentivised to pursue their interests, but that can lead to research focusing on a range of topics -but some of them may not be directly useful to society. For instance, a significant aspect of science is developing theories and making predictions that can be tested. These discoveries are utilized to create new technologies, for instance medical devices and pharmaceuticals.

To be of value Science must also be able to address issues and challenges that impact human wellbeing. This requires collaboration with stakeholders to define their needs, formulate specific goals and formulate a plan that addresses these requirements. Many scientific initiatives are lacking this kind of collaboration and instead focus on advancing knowledge without any direct connection to society. Additionally, the impact of research is often not measured and tracked in an effective manner.

Translational ecology (TE) is one of the many strategies that have been developed for producing usable science. It focuses on the importance of scientists taking a proactive approach to considering and responding to the research context. TE also emphasizes the importance of involving people in a meaningful way throughout the research process and encourages learning-based decision making processes such as adaptive management which is widely used by natural resource and land managers.
